Excellent food. Restaurant was packed with people. Pork chop for my sandwich was hot and huge. I also got a shrimp basket. Basket was excellent.

The standard fried fish and shrimp were great. However, what I think they do very well is the cornbread! I can't remember the last time I had a cornbread that didn't make me cough. Most cornbreads out there are just too dry for me. Not this place! It's moist and delicious. Just a warning, they don't take phone orders unless you have at least 5 items to order.

Great food. About 10 bucks a person average. Food tastes like 40 dollars a plate food! Seafood Saturday is awesome. Best cornbread in Charleston!Edit: the service and hospitality might be better than the food! If you are looking for a place to eat tonight, stop looking and click the directions button to get here. Thank me later!

The best fried chicken, Lima beans were seasoned to perfection. Everything on the menu looked scrumptious!! I see clearly why this restaurant was awarded the coveted James Beard Award! Well deserved.

If you want some down home Southern cooking, Bertha's Kitchen is definitely the spot!! The food was seasoned to perfection and the customer service was exceptional!! I had the pleasure of meeting one of the sisters and she made me feel right at home. If you're ever in the downtown Charleston area, you won't regret stopping here...

Bertha’s is a James Beard Award winning establishment. Well deserved. First point there is not a valet and there are no table clothes. You walk up to a hot line and order your food from the table. There are no servers. So this is fare warning if you go. The service there is friendly and warm.

Bertha's Kitchen had good food for little money. It is not somewhere I would recommend nonpork eaters. However, the yams and turkey wings were good.

Best soul food this side of Charleston, hands down. This is one place which lives up to its "word of mouth" hype. It's always busy, but worth the wait. This spot is definitely the food incarnation of a mother's hug. Hooked, and lovin' it.

You only visit this place once as a stranger; after that you are part of the family. I stayed only two days in Charleston, but Bertha's food was so good that I had to go back the second day. The staff recognized me and greeted my family with wonderful southern charm. Do not leave without trying the yams, mac and cheese, and cornbread. Everything on the menu is delicious, so you just can't go wrong. Try it on vacation, and you just might find yourself driving back to Charleston for another taste of Bertha's.

Overhyped but still really good. Can't beat the main special, 4.50 for a huge meal of fried chicken, corn bread and Lima beans and rice. The okra soup isn't to my liking, but I prefer it to be peppery and vinegary. Theirs is very mealy and flat. Could have been the day I ate it.

Bertha's offers a soul food option not to be missed if you're going to travel to Charleston. In a very small unobtrusive old house converted into Charleston's famous soul food kitchen, locally owned and family operated, close enough to downtown to make it worth the trip on the way to or from the Airport. You cannot go wrong with a visit to Charleston's best soul food enterprise, I recommend that you bring your own silverware and some really good takeout or to go plates because you'll want to take this food with you on your trip. If you're looking for good food at a good price, filling and wholesome then this is definitely a place worth looking for. If you come during the day be prepared to wait because this place will be packed. I had okra and shrimp soup, shrimp and gravy over red rice with a liberal helping of Texas Pete red sauce, cabbage and ham hoc, andcorn bread for just under 15$ on a seafood Saturday 2pm.

Visited in Jan-This is the crown jewel of Charleston. When traveling we normally have time to stop at each restaurant once....we went to Berthas THREE times. (the last time we bought Tupperware so we could bring it home!) Hands down the best food I’ve ever put in my mouth. Love the changing menu! The service was fantastic! We ate:Yams.Okra Soup with rice.Fried chicken breast.White meat seasoned chicken.Cabbage.Pork and Beans.Cornbread.Ribs. Red Rice and Sausage. Collard greens & bacon.Okra soup is out of this world.

Friends brought me here for lunch, raving about how good it is. If you like soul food, you'll really like this place. Wide variety including ox-tail, pig's feet, collards, rice & gravy, sausage w/beans, fried chicken and macaroni. Much more. Seems to be a popular spot. My 3 stars reflects the fact that I don't care for soul food and nothing here is healthy. Quite the opposite. My large group thinks this is the best soul food in Charleston, so give it try. Family owned and operated. Large portions at a very fair price. Tight parking on the side and in the rear.

If there's one spot to eat good, home-style southern food, it's Bertha's. Here's what you want: fried pork chop, limas over rice, okra soup, and cornbread.

Quintessential James Beard awarded soul food fare that was a ~30 minute wait (went at ~2.30PM on a Sunday). Reasonably priced, fried chicken was very crispy on the outside and cornbread was delicious. Did get the Mac n cheese, would probably not get this side again since it was average and there are many other sides to choose from.

Some of the best food in town! Not a great place if you're a vegetarian but you can find some sides to eat. It's a meat and sides kind of a place and everything is delicious! Highly recommended the fried pork chops and the lima beans. The line is always long but they move it pretty quickly and most people get their food to go. The place does have additional seating upstairs.

The food was delicious and the service was very friendly. It is obviously a popular place with a steady stream of patrons. Looks like mostly for take away. Largest turkey wings I have ever seen for sure and the cornbread is the best I ever tasted in my life hands down. But the place could have been somewhat cleaner. There are a lot of workers but on entering there was a large used napkin on the floor in the entryway (we removed it) and where we sat to eat could have done with some sweeping as well. More attention to details like that would be nice. One of those workers can swing through the place tidying and sweeping from time to time. I will go back for sure.

This has got to be one of, if not my favorite soul food restaurant in all of the Charleston area. It's a non-pretentious hole in the wall restaurant that dishes out mouth watering southern soul food the where your grandmother used to make it. If down home eating is what you like then this is the place to find it. I highly recommend it.

When I walked in the line was to the door. It was moving but not fast. The menu was a little hard to understand, so I had to ask a customer. I wanted a particular plate but I also wanted to add sides. I was not clear on how much things cost because their prices were not listed. The staff was lovely, and I ordered the food I wanted. Food was decent. I did enjoy the Pork n Beans & Sausage, but they gave me a ton a rice and very little beans. I would like to visit again, but I am in no rush.

The food is good and the place is small. They may not open on time and you have to wait in a line. That is a attribute to the quality of food they provide. I recommend giving them a try. I suggest if you are able to call in to avoid the long line. We dined in and you may not have leg and elbow room yet you do have access to free refills on the sweet tea, lol.

There are no servers. So this is fare warning if you go. The service there is friendly and warm. I there is a neighborhood atmosphere of people taking care of people that is pouring out everywhere. The food has soul. Yams, collards, Lima beans, macaroni and cheese Fried Fish and Fried Pork Chops. Plus the signature Okra soup. All of this for $20 bucks. Well worth it.
